  1.                            EXPOSITION.

  3.         Natural enough is this closing prayer, for what would so
  4. effectually convince atheists, overthrow persecutors, stay sin,
  5. and secure the godly, as the manifest appearance of Israel's
  6. great Salvation? The coming of Messiah was the desire of the
  7. godly in all ages, and though he has already come with a
  8. sin-offering to purge away iniquity, we look for him to come a
  9. second time, to come without a sin-offering unto salvation. O
  10. that these weary years would have an end! Why tarries he so long?
  11. He knows that sin abounds and that his people are down-trodden;
  12. why comes he not to the rescue? His glorious advent will restore
  13. his ancient people from literal captivity, and his spiritual seed
  14. from spiritual sorrow. Wrestling Jacob and prevailing Israel
  15. shall alike rejoice before him when he is revealed as their
  16. salvation. O that he were come! What happy, holy, halcyon,
  17. heavenly days should we then see! But let us not count him slack,
  18. for behold, he comes, he comes quickly! Blessed are all they that
  19. wait for him.

  21.               EXPLANATORY NOTES AND QUAINT SAYINGS.

  23.         Verse 7.--"_O that the salvation_," etc. Like as when we
  24. be in quiet, we do pray either nothing at all, or very coldly
  25. unto God; so in adversity and trouble, our spirit is stirred up
  26. and enkindled to prayer, whereof we do find examples everywhere
  27. in the Psalms of David: so that affliction is as it were the
  28. sauce of prayer, as hunger is unto meat. Truly their prayer is
  29. usually unsavoury who are without afflictions, and many of them
  30. do not pray truly, but do rather counterfeit a prayer, or pray
  31. for custom.--^Wolfgang Musculus, 1497-1563.

  33.         Verse 7.--"_Out of Zion_." Zion the church is no Saviour,
  34. neither dare we trust in her ministers or ordinances, and yet
  35. salvation comes to men through her. The hungry multitudes are fed
  36. by the hands of the disciples, who delight to act as the
  37. servitors of the gospel feast. Zion becomes the site of the
  38. fountain of healing waters which shall flow east and west till
  39. all nations drink thereat. What a reason for maintaining in the
  40. utmost purity and energy all the works of the church of the
  41. living God!--^C. H. S.

  43.         Verse 7.--"_When the Lord turneth the captivity of his
  44. people: then shall Jacob rejoice and Israel shall be
  45. glad_."--Notice that by Israel we are to understand those other
  46. sheep which the Lord has that are not of this fold, but which he
  47. must also bring, that they may hear his voice. For it is Israel,
  48. not Judah; Sion, not Jerusalem. "_When the Lord turneth the
  49. captivity of his people_. " "_Then_," as it is in the parallel
  50. passage, "_were we like unto them that dream_." A glorious dream
  51. indeed, in which, fancy what we may, the half of the beauty, the
  52. half of the splendour, will not be reached by our imagination.
  53. "_The captivity_" of our souls to the law of concupiscence, of
  54. our bodies to the law of death; the captivity of our senses to
  55. fear; the captivity, the conclusion of which is so beautifully
  56. expressed by one of our greatest poets:--namely, _Giles Fletcher_
  57. (1588--1623), in his "Christ's Triumph over Death."

  60.         No bloodless malady impales their face;
  61.         No age drops on their hairs his silver snow;
  62.         No nakedness their bodies doth embrace;
  63.         No poverty themselves and theirs disgrace;
